Hometown History Kicks Off the Roots of a Nation Program

Friday, February 18, 2011 - The Roots of a Nation Teaching American History program officially got underway this morning when 10 teachers from Kent, Caroline, Talbot, Dorchester, and St. Mary's Counties met in Chestertown for Hometown History, a two-day seminar conducted by the C.V. Starr Center for the American Experience. The seminar focuses on using local resources to study broader themes in American history, with a particular emphasis on slavery and the Civil War. In the morning, the teachers began the workshop with an audio tour of the Chestertown waterfront. They then met with Adam Goodheart and Jill Ogline Titus of the C.V. Starr Center to discuss how they located the primary sources that were utilized throughout the tour.
This is the first program of a teacher training initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Keep checking in with this blog to get updates on the many informative and inspiring programs that will be taking place throughout the Chesapeake region over the next three years!
