Artifacts & Documents

Tammy Payne
Leonardtown Middle School, St. Mary’s County Public Schools

1. Summarize your experiences, impressions, and what you learned.

This was an amazing experience. Personally, I enjoyed the time spent with Chris Haley and wish more time could have been spent with him. The artifacts that can be found locally in St. Mary's County will make history come alive for my students. Touching the records from the 1700s and 1800's was thrilling and reignited a yearning for my county's past. I am going to check with the local courthouse to see if I can either take pictures or bring students to see the records that they have on file.

2. What will you add to your instruction? (In other words, what might you revise in
your instruction based on new information, visual resources, teaching strategies, and/or perspectives presented at the TAH session?)

A few years ago I had a guest speaker from the local historical society come to my class. She presented a wonderful session on Leonardtown and the American Revolution. I am going to call her and see if she would be willing to present on the War of 1812 next school year. Also, I plan on using some of the historical documents I found on Sotterley to teach my unit on slavery and the Civil War.

I am going to use these primary sources to see if my students can see figure out why the same advertisement was printed in several different states. They are going to use a map to trace the locations.
